Absolutely loved everything about this twisty, turny, trashy little book. I've never read something quite like it. Tortured, weird characters and a story that was disturbingly fun and addictive. No flowery prose just gritty and right to the point. I love the subtext and my interpretation is that the entire story is a metaphor. I can see how this is a kind of love it or hate it book, it was mentioned to me by someone who hated the book but "couldn't put it down." That's when I knew I had to read it.
I'm a woman and loved watching the spectacle of Scarlet Parker but I am guessing she will touch a nerve with a lot of women who secretly identify with her but just can't stand to look. Her partner is also great, such a mess but a fun mess to watch.
I enjoyed how answers to the mystery are seemingly right in your face but then they aren't or are they? It's well crafted story telling with a bold voice. Read it first but then went back, the addition of being able to listen to the songs the killer is leaving behind was brilliant. This work is a must read.

Your Sin Songs for Dead Girls edition by S F Berlin Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I was so incredibly intrigued at the idea of reading a multi-media murder mystery. On the one hand, I read a lot and am pretty set in my ways. On the other hand, whenever I break away from the norm and try something new, I am usually pleasantly surprised and stretched to new levels. This is what happened as I read author S.F. Berlin's "Your Sin Songs for Dead Girls". The story of a serial killer in San Francisco who is leaving behind a new song (and clue) with each corpse. The reader gets to follow the two detectives as they try to solve this dark case, but also gets to click on the links and listen to the songs as the story progresses. A wonderful new experience for me that was haunting and unforgettable. Recommended.
This book had a very interesting vibe, managing to blend a number of different genres seamlessly. I've never seen anything quite so ambitious, and I have to say that the author accomplished this goal here. It was really unlike any ride I've taken before, and I'm something of an avid reader.
The novel seemed to be primarily a mix between a mystery and a romance novel, although the songs played an important purpose in moving the story along. I know that the author said that this was not a musical, but I found that it worked best to play the songs in the background while reading the relevant sections. Kind of like mood music, although the lyrics were important to the progress of the story, so make sure to listen carefully.
The story started out fairly predictably, but did a good job of getting me to question a lot of the assumptions that I had made along the way. As the plot wound its way towards the conclusion, I wasn't quite sure how things would end up, at least until the final few pages. The ending was somewhat shocking, if not entirely unexpected. Definitely fitting with the flavor of the novel.
As for the songs, they were quite well done, with a sound and lyrics that matched the novel's flavor. This was a dark, dark story, and the author is clearly a talented songwriter in addition to his skill with prose. I'm definitely interested in seeing more of S.F Berlin's work, and I wonder whether he can extend this mechanism to other genres as well.
I did not want to read this book. Serial killers, steamy content, music, murder etc.. are not something I am drawn to. (maybe 30 years ago but not now). I also felt repelled by the first-of-its-kind billing. (more on that later) However, I know someone that absolutely raved about this book, and their enthusiasm got me as far as the description page. I began to feel uncomfortable all over again but also being someone who likes to investigate my reactions I decided to read the sample pages - more discomfort BUT more curiosity. The writing style is very tight and moves fast and seems to have a gripping effect. Then I clicked the link for the first song that is used in the story. Against my will I was moved. It's a powerful song and the vocals were extremely compelling. I read more, then listened to the second song, it was very seductive. Hmm... Still sitting with discomfort I simultaneously found my self wanting to know what was around the corner in this book. I pulled the trigger and I was not disappointed.
Despite my disapproval of the subject matter, I was transported. I usually like more of a sweet, less twisted/disturbing ride. Yet I could not put it down. The characters are full of nuance, layers and contradictions that aren't really contradictions (see what I mean) and the story will not let you relax or stop asking questions. And without risk of giving it away, I will say the end delivered.
With some shame I will admit that I read the story again and have listened through the music repeatedly. This story does not need the music but it brought something to the table that was profound and I don't know for sure but reluctantly I admit this book does seem to be a first-of-its-kind, I know I have never seen or read a book like this. So I give my stars to this book from a dark corner where no one can see my face, my will broken by an unexpectedly great book
This novella captured my attention immediately after reading the summary description. The concept of a multi media mystery novella had the promise of an exciting experience. I was not disappointed! From the beginning I was transported from my world, into the world where a serial killer becomes infamous by posting the songs he writes for the beautiful women he murders. The song and music component are enthralling at best. Not to sound too morbid, but I was left wanting the serial killer to murder again just to hear another song. The sexual and emotional desires of Scarlet Parker were so real to life that she could be any one of us. S. F. Berlin’s dark telling of erotica left me breathless more than once. My only disappointment was when I came to the shocking end of this story. It is with great anticipation that S. F. Berlin will author another installment to continue this story of all consuming sex, murder, and unconditional love.
Absolutely loved everything about this twisty, turny, trashy little book. I've never read something quite like it. Tortured, weird characters and a story that was disturbingly fun and addictive.
